Intersectoral mobility seems to be a major problem because different labour market characteristics apply between sectors, among other factors. It is desirable for all employees to change jobs from time to time in order to enhance their knowledge and skills. However, it seems to be problematic for people to move from one company to another, partly because of resistance and distrust among organisations, close-knit team structures, the abandoning of security concerns and a strong team spirit.
In addition, there are image problems with mobility programmes in that they are frequently organised around reintegration, and not around healthy career progression. The intersectoral mobility problem is very much in evidence in the aviation industry precisely because of major fluctuations in supply and demand between sectors.
